Divided from Peninsula Malaysia by the South China Sea is the island of Borneo. Sabah is one of two Malaysian states on the island and is located on the north-east coast. Its capital, Kota Kinabalu serves as the gateway to the attractions of Borneo, including the orang-utan and the country’s highest mountain, Mt. Travel
There are no direct flights to Kota Kinabalu from the UK, but the airport is well served with scheduled flights via Asian hubs, such as Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Flying time from Kuala Lumpur is 2 1/2 hours. The airport is five miles from Kota Kinabalu. We can arrange for you to be met on arrival and transferred privately to your accommodation. Prices vary according to the distance from the airport to the accommodation. Ask us for details.
Activities
Most visitors will want to see Borneo’s icon, the orangutan. This can be done with a day trip to the Sepilok Orang-Utan Centre, at Sandakan, or a stay at Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria which has its own orang-utan sanctuary. Sipadan has superb diving. Day trips can be made to visit Mt.Kinabalu, and for the adventurous a 3 day trek to the very summit can be arranged (advance pre-booking essential). The Danum Valley is set amidst a vast tropical rainforest with great opportunity to see orang-utans and monkeys.
When to go
Borneo is at its best during March to October. The rainy season is usually from November through to February, but during this time you can expect sunshine amidst the downpours. Expect hot and humid weather all year round. |
