Thailand: Chiang Mai elephant-back ride

Guide to Chiang Mai & Hotels

Chiang Mai is located over 400 miles to the north of Bangkok and set amongst the highest mountains in the country, offering superb views. With its strategic location on the Ping River, Chiang Mai is the most culturally significant city in Northern Thailand with historic temples, markets and distinctive festivals. The old walled town is particularly attractive for visitors to stroll around and enjoy the handicraft shopping, art galleries and restaurants
Travel
Chiang Mai is served by regular scheduled services from Bangkok; a flying time of 70 minutes. The airport is 2 1/2 miles from the city, with a journey time of 15-20 minutes. We can arrange for you to be met on arrival at the airport and a private car transfer to your hotel from £8 per person.

Attractions
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is Chiang Mai’s most important landmark, and overlooks the city from its forested mountain backdrop. Further afield visit a hill tribe village for a sample of modern tribal life. An elephant-back ride through the lush jungle is a pleasant way to experience the spectacular scenery.

When to go

Chiang Mai is warm all year round but the coolest period is November to February - temperatures are a maximum of 25°C, with an occasional chill in the mornings. Temperatures rise to a maximum of 40°C during the hottest period from March to June and some visitors may find this period too hot. The wet season lasts from July to October. Downpours and high humidity occur. Rainfall is unpredictable so a few dry days can be followed by a few wet days. Temperatures at this time average 30°C.
